| Ways to save |
What you’ll save |
|---|---|
| Mulching |
A well mulched garden stops evaporation by up to 70%. |
| Prepare your soil |
Using fertiliser, water storing agents and wetting crystals will ensure your soil stays as healthy as possible. |
| Check your outdoor taps and hoses for leaks |
A dripping tap or leaking hose wastes lots of water. Repair leaking taps immediately. |
| Use a cover on your pool and check the pool for leaks |
A pool cover will reduce evaporation from the pool. |
| If planting new plants, choose drought tolerant ones |
Drought tolerant plants have a better chance of survival in dry climates and they can look great too! |
| Don’t cut the lawn too short |
Longer grass has deeper roots which are more resilient. |
| Install a rainwater tank | Great for the garden and pool and you can use it anytime. Use a plumber to connect your tank to your toilet and washing machine to achieve the greatest water savings. |
| Install a permanent grey water system |
This enables you to collect grey water for reuse on your property. Remember to follow EPA’s guidelines on safe use of grey water. These can be found at http://www.epa.vic.gov.au/water/reuse/reuse.asp |
